Landscape Vase : Wittenham Clumps
I made the Wittenham Clumps Landscape Vase to celebrate a fqavourite place of mine. "The Clumps" are well know beyond the local area since they were often painted by the the war artist Paul Nash, who lived nearby during the early 20th Century.
My interpretation of this landscape captures the scene in summer, featuring the barley fields yellowing, the green trees in full leaf and the blue water of the River Thames. I handpaint each vase, leaving the outside of the piece mostly matte, with the inside given a coat of transparent glaze.
These are highly tactile ceramics, made using a 'patchwork’ method. I texture each patch of clay with found objects such as fabric, seedheads or scraps of wood. Then the clay is built up from the bottom in an organic way - I am guided by my memory of the scene. This leads to a piece with texture and a unique design. I can't duplicate these piece, it's is a one-of-a-kind piece of ceramic art, I belive the way i create these vases leads to ceramics whcih are both earthy and elegant. The highly textured surface adds depth and dimension making this vase stand out from other pottery.
While ithe vase looks great on its own, you could display dried flowers or gathered finds from nature in this vase. The organic form complements the natural beauty of dried flowers, gathered branches or seed heads either for a table display or on a shelf.
This vase could be a thoughtful and meaningful gift for yourself, or for someone who loves natural landscapes.
